My Condolences

The tears rolled down my face
before the phone hit the floor
in a single blink
the world became an obscure water painting
the colours made nothing more
than a thick splodge
immovable

Suffocating silence
entered the room
as the casket vacated
outside, somewhere in the garden
a robin was tormenting next door’s fat cat

A stale cold spread of various meat
was set up near the bar
heads where stained with grief
as night’s wing circled outside
not a word was spoken
until a small child
started pulling at his mother’s jumper,
pointing to a window
“It’s snowing”
